UK - Installation guide for the Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router (Ethernet)

To start, make sure you've uninstalled and disconnected your ISP-supplied USB modem completely. Also, make sure you have to hand the username and password your ISP supplied to you when signed up for their service. If you're not sure of this, ask your ISP.



1. Connect the supplied power adaptor to the power port on the Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router (labelled 18VAC 1A), and plug it into a power outlet.

2. Connect your ADSL cable from your ADSL filter to the DSL port on the Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router.

3. Connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port on your computer (the picture at shows a desktop, but you can use a laptop with an Ethernet port) to LAN port number 1 on the Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router.

4. Set your computer to get an IP address from the Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router via DHCP - see the table below for instuctions for your system:

1. Click Windows' 'Start' menu, then 'Settings', then click 'Control Panel'.
2. Double-click the 'Network' icon.
3. Under the 'Configuration' tab, select 'TCP/IP' for the network adapter you want to use to connect to your 2Wire router/modem.
4. Click 'Properties'.
5. Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.
6. Click 'OK' twice.
7. Restart your computer.

1. Click Windows' 'Start' menu, then 'Settings/Control Panel', then click 'Network Connections'.
2. Right-click Local Area Connection icon.
3. Click 'Properties'.
4. Select 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)'.
5. Click 'Properties'.
6. Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server automatically'.
7. Click 'OK' twice.
8. Restart your computer.

1. Click the Windows icon (bottom-left of screen), then 'Control Panel', then click 'Network and Internet'.
2. Under subheading 'Network and sharing center', click 'View network status and tasks'.
3. At the right of the Local Area Connection, click 'View status'.
4. Select 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)'.
5. Click 'Properties'.
6. Select 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server automatically'.
7. Click 'OK' twice.
8. Restart your computer.

1. OSX: From the dock or Apple menu, open 'System Preferences', and click on 'Network'.
1. OS9: From the Apple menu, open 'Control Panels>TCP/IP'.
2. In 'Show:/Connect via': Select 'Ethernet Slot 0 / Ethernet Adapter for USB connection' or 'Built-in Ethernet for Ethernet Connection'.
3. In 'Configure': select the option 'Using DHCP'.
4. Click 'Save/Apply Now'and close the window.
5. Restart your computer.



5. The lights on the Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router should be:
Power - Green
DSL - Green
Ethernet 1 - Green

6. Now to configure the Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router, using its web-based wizard. Open a web browser - you'll see the router's Welcome screen. Click "Set up my SpeedTouch", then click Next at the first screen of the wizard:


7. Select "Routed PPP" then click Next:


8. Select "0.38" from the list for VPI/VCI and choose PPP over ATM (PPPoA) from the Connection type list, then click Next:


9. Enter the username and password your ISP gave your when you signed up with their service. If you're not sure of these, call your ISP and ask. Click Next:


10. The router gives you the option of entering a password, to prevent others accessing the router's administration pages. Pick any password you wish - this isn't related at all to your ISP password:


11. The Thomson Speedtouch 716 ADSL modem router will now take a little time to configure itself - leave it for 5 minutes:


12. That's it! You're now ready to surf the web.

13. You can now plug your phone line into the PSTN port on the back of the router, and connect your phone to phone port 1 on the router.
